ElfLand (4,000 G)
Of the Spells that actually work, AMUT is the least useful. It doesn't create a resistance to Silence like you might expect, but rather cures it. However, you can't cast it if you are Silenced yourself, which makes its use questionable enough (especially since MUTE hits all targets). Add to that that only four Monsters in the entire game cast MUTE, and this Spell becomes even more iffy. With a price tag of 4,000 G, it's just insulting.

Silence is a very situational Spell. Not that many Monsters cast Spells, and a lot of those that do cast Spells you don't need to worry about. There are a few exceptions, but many of those have high Magic Defense or resistance to Status. Still, there is little more amusing than hitting Marilith with Slow1 and Silence and watching her swing ineffectively once per round.

Fog is an interesting Spell in that it's mostly redundant with Silence. It's less accurate, and the only difference is that it inflicts the permanent version of Mute, Amnesia. It's also Mind-elemental instead of Body-elemental, which can be helpful. Unfortunately, this is also the version of the Spell you'll actually see some enemies using. If you want to make sure your enemies don't regain the ability to cast Spells at the end of the round, Fog is a sure thing while Silence isn't. You probably don't need both, though.

Silence inflicts the temporary Status Ailment Mute on your targets. Unfortunately, as a temporary ailment, Mute has a chance of wearing off at the end of any round. There is another Spell, Fog, which inflicts the permanent version of Mute (Amnesia), though it's slightly less accurate and you won't find it until Fynn is freed later in the game. Choose which of the two Spells you want, because you won't need both. Note that you will run into Spellcasters long before Fog becomes available, another point in Silence's favor.
