Ogres hit hard and accurately, and have plenty of HP. Early in the game they are often accompanied by Gigas Worms, especially around Elfheim. The Worms should be your first priority in those cases since they are easy to kill but deal nearly as much damage. Ogres are a decent source of money in the early levels, and serve as standard meaty foes for quite a while.

Ogre Mages don't dish out much damage on their own, but their Spells make them hard to take out, so defeat them before worrying about their companions. They will always lead with Blink, increasing their already decent Evasion to a whopping 134. They have a number of debuff Spells, and will even hit the party with Ice2 if given enough time. Kill them before that happens.

Ogre Chiefs have three decent attacks, but the main concern is their high defense. It shouldn't be nearly high enough to stop you from destroying them, but like other high HP Monsters, it won't be a quick kill. If you're lucky, these guys might drop a powerful Wing Sword.
